What is Entrainment?
When we experience a sound bath or engage in sound healing, we probably just rest in the experience. But are you curious about what is happening in the practice?
That feel good feeling you’re noticing is a concept called entrainment.
Think about what happens when a group of people are clapping … and there is one person clapping off beat. Naturally, that person will find the beat, based on their proximity to the others clapping around them. They come into harmony and find the beat!
That is a real simple way to think of entrainment.
Everything vibrates - every object, person, or thing in the world. Entrainment is the natural process of one object’s vibration inducing other objects to fall into the same vibratory resonance. Essentially, entrainment occurs when the sound coming from an external source, usually a sound healing instrument like a singing bowl, gong, or our voice, is used to tune the body back into a harmonious or coherent state.
It is that beautiful vibration of the soundscape created by the facilitator that influences the shift in the recipient, allowing their body, energy, and mind to sync up with the produced sound and vibration.
The next time you rest in sound, remember that we are able to evoke different states of being through our relationship with sound with the physics phenomenon of entrainment.
